KEY NOTES: MEETING THE NEEDS OF THE YOUTH
Why is meeting youth needs so
important?
If youth needs are met in positive ways,
they develop characteristics that strengthens them more for better services.
Youth with productive opportunities to experience mastery tend to become
problem solvers who are motivated and achievement oriented. Youth who
experiences opportunities to be independent become confident and self
disciplined leaders and those who also experiences generosity becomes caring
and empathic people
If youth needs are met in negative ways,
unmet needs can become defining factors in the lives of the youth which might
also turn out as negative outcomes in the youth circle. Youth seek to belong
through promiscuous or clinging behaviors. They attempt to feel mastery by
developing delinquent skills. They try to establish independence by being
bullies or through defiant behaviors.Youths are unable to establish their
identity and lose themselves in constantly giving.
If youth needs consistently go unmet,
some youth retreat or give up on getting need met which basically shouldnt be
so. Youth who have not bonded to adults do not bond to institutions. Not only
broken families that causes youth violence and other problems but rather broken
bonds between youth and adults. Youth with no productive opportunities for
mastery often give up easily and risks because sometimes think its easier not
to try than to try and fail. To be respected is to have power winning respect
through aggressive techniques is immensely important when there is so little to
be had. Youth with no opportunities to connect meaningfully with others become
isolated in their own experience and often become selfish and even antisocial.
Will
like to emphasize the importance of meeting four basic needs as youth
development principles:
-Belongings
-Mastery
-Independence
-Generousity
This emphasizes on meeting the most basic
psychological needs of youth by creating opportunities that build on individual
strengths.
It's easy to think that without adult aid,
young people wont be able to meet their own needs or develop skills &
values but the truth is, even very young children will create a framework of
values and will develop skills to manage daily life. The question becomes
"what kind of values and what kind of skills"? Are the values &
skills ultimately self-destructive or ultimately helpful in the life of youth
and the community?
Moreso, its important to note that youth
especially most of today will use every skills and bit of energy at their
disposal to make them feel better because each of us inn every situation is
hoping to find a way to feel more at ease and more in control. Once we understand
this part of human nature, we understand what motivates behavior and can begin
to recognize unmet needs.
Lastly, if youth needs are met, there will
be an increase in economy development and also betterment in the lives of the
youth. It's then we can say, we hope for a better future for our youth.
Thanks for your patience to read through!
God bless.
