WOMEN OF NIGERIA
THE WOMEN OF NIGERIA: PROBLEMS, PANACEA AND PROSPECTS.
Nigeria women have also been the nerve center of patriotic favors. They are often times optimistic and positive about the development of our dear nation. They have always support the determined efforts to be in the vanguard of any movement aimed at making the nation truly great. Their optimism and vibrancy are mostly been challenged by the problems faced in terms of denial of some women rights and gender equality. However, these problems have remedial factors and at the same time prospects for the nation.
Gender equality is a human right. Still, despite solid evidences demonstrating the centrality of women empowerment to reducing poverty, promoting development of the economy and addressing the nation’s most urgent challenges, gender equality remains an unfulfilled promise. The fact that no woman has ever ruled Nigeria is an attestation to this. Also, in establishing the current extent of gender inequality in Nigeria, report note that there are twice as many women below the poverty line as men and between six and nineteen times as many men as women in managerial positions, depending on sector.
Socio-cultural constraints are also problems facing Nigerian women. The nature of Nigerian culture is a key reason for the relative disempowerment of Nigerian women. Together with a mix of cultural and religious beliefs that infringe on women’s rights and are integrated into customary law
Legal constraints are also key. Despite apparent legal protection for women in the federal constitution, this protection can be contradicted by gender biased laws such as the need for female police officers to gain permission to many. In addition, the constitution removes only women opportunity to confer citizenship onto a foreign spouse and there is significant variation in the legal rights afforded to women across the country regarding asset ownership and marriage.
Political constraints are also regarded problem facing Nigerian women. They are comparatively invisible on the Nigerian political scene particularly at the state and federal levels. Both self imposed and systematic constraints combine in a mutually reinforcing manner with violence and male domination of decision making leading to a lack of willingness on the part of women to engage. Additionally, the monetization of politics and influence means wealthy political sponsors are unlikely to back female candidates.
Having expatiated on the above remediable problems facing Nigerian women, some of the panaceas to the problems are that the legal protection for women in the federal constitution should be favorably reviewed. Women entrepreneur in the country that are been underutilized should be empowered and given more attention. Women should be given enough privileges and utmost support in political participations, policy formulations, governmental offices and positions. The socio-cultural constraints should be given adequate and rationalized attention at all levels. Women interest and participation in science and technology should also be promoted and awaken.
However, there are enough prospects from Nigerian women in societal and national development if their remediable problems are solved and also if they are given more opportunities to execute their skills, values and ideas. The empowerments of women entrepreneurs will improve their contribution to social development, economic development, health and productivity of their families and community. The awaking interest to have women participation in science and technology come as a result of the need to get everybody involved in nation development and societal benefits. The review of the legal protection for women in the federal constitution will give a rationalized benefits and women participation in policy formulations. The participation of women in science and technology, governmental positions and some other sectors will disclose a feminine touch and also there will be more human face in the economic system that will meet the needs of all categories of persons and groups which in turn will influence positive decisions for political and economic development of the nation. They will also improve prospects for the next generation.
In conclusion, Nigerian women are also major stakeholders in the development projects of the society. There are opportunities and resources possessed by them which represent potential leverage points for their development. With the clear fact that gender equality is a human right, Nigerian women are entitled to live with dignity and with freedom from want and fear. Gender equality is also a precondition for advancing development and reducing poverty.
I strongly believe that if the remedial problems of Nigerian women are reviewed and solved, the possibility that something favorable and positive will happen will be a soonest achievement.
